Duke of Ed Adventurous Journeys for schools
Southbound works with schools to plan and deliver Bronze, Silver and Gold Adventurous Journeys. We help bring together the practical parts of the program, including journey design, group planning, preparation, equipment responsibilities and field delivery, so your team has a clear plan before students depart.

Planning
Planning a Duke of Ed journey with your school
Every school program is different. Cohort size, student experience, available dates, location, journey type and school requirements all influence how the program should be structured.
We work with your Duke of Ed team to understand those requirements first, then develop a practical journey plan around them.
Journey design
Select an appropriate location, journey format and route for your students and Duke of Ed requirements.
Groups and logistics
Work through participant numbers, group structure, dates and the practical requirements of running the program.
Preparation
Clarify what students and school staff need to complete, organise and bring before departure.
Field delivery
Deliver the agreed Adventurous Journey with experienced outdoor education staff and the operational support included in your program.
Program options
Choose the program that fits your school
Schools can use established Southbound journey formats or work with us to develop a program around specific requirements.
Hiking
Multi-day journeys where students apply navigation, campcraft, route planning and teamwork in an outdoor environment.
Canoeing
Journey-based programs where students travel as a team, manage equipment and make decisions together over multiple days.
Tailored programs
For schools with particular dates, locations, cohort requirements or program objectives, we can discuss a program designed around those needs.
The final program structure will depend on your students, Duke of Ed Level requirements and the plan approved by your school’s Duke of Ed Leader.
Levels
Bronze, Silver and Gold
Southbound can support schools delivering Adventurous Journeys across all three Duke of Ed Levels.

Bronze
2 days / 1 night · Qualifying Journey
Bronze introduces the foundations of the Adventurous Journey. Students begin applying skills such as navigation, camp organisation, teamwork and shared decision-making.
A Bronze Practice Journey is optional under the current Duke of Ed framework and should be included only where it forms part of the student’s approved plan.

What Southbound manages, and what stays with your school
Southbound provides
The Adventurous Journey activity and the services agreed as part of your school’s program.
Your school retains
Your Duke of Ed Centre and Duke of Ed Leader remain responsible for participant registration, activity approvals and overall Level administration.
Before the program is confirmed, we work with your team to make the responsibilities on both sides clear.
How it runs
Before, during and after the journey
A well-run program starts well before students arrive at the departure point.
We work with your team to confirm the journey structure, dates, groups, equipment responsibilities, preparation requirements and other agreed program details.
Students and staff receive the information they need to prepare for the journey.
Experience
Experience working with schools
Southbound has delivered outdoor education and Duke of Ed experiences across NSW for decades.
For schools, experience matters because there are more considerations than simply delivering the journey itself. Planning, communication, student preparation, school requirements and field delivery all need to work together.
