How It Works

How a Southbound Duke of Ed journey works

Every Adventurous Journey follows a clear path. From approval and preparation through to the journey itself, we help make each stage easier to understand and easier to manage.

Participants

Your journey, step by step

  1. 1

    Confirm your plan

Check with your Duke of Ed Leader

Before choosing a journey, confirm your Award level, journey requirements and proposed activity with your Award Leader.

  2. 2

    Choose your journey

Find an option that works for you

Choose a scheduled journey that suits your Award level and availability, then book or enquire if you need help deciding.

  3. 3

    Get prepared

Know what to expect before you leave

We’ll provide the practical information you need, including equipment, food, fitness expectations, meeting points and what the journey will involve.

  4. 4

    Take on the journey

Travel, camp and work as a team

With experienced Southbound leaders supporting the group, you’ll navigate, manage camp, make decisions together and complete the required journey.

  5. 5

    Complete your records

    Record your experience

After the journey, complete the evidence required for your Award and submit it through the Online Record Book or as directed by your Award Leader.

Responsibilities

Who is responsible for what

Southbound

We deliver the journey

Southbound provides the Adventurous Journey activity, including journey design, field leadership, preparation information, communication and operational support.

Your school or Duke of Ed Award Leader

They oversee the Award

Your school or Award Leader manages participant registration, approves the Adventurous Journey plan and signs off the journey evidence and overall Award requirements.

Our approach

Success is the willingness to try.

The process matters because the journey is about more than reaching the end.

It is about preparing well, contributing to the group, making decisions together and being willing to keep going when things get difficult.
